Nebraska State Fair
Grand Island is proud to be the host community for the Nebraska State Fair. More than 330,000 people attend the Fair annually. As Nebraska’s largest entertainment event with concerts, strolling acts, fair food, shopping and carnival midway, the Nebraska State Fair is fun for the entire family. Exhibitors from 4-H, FFA, and Open Class participate in various competitions, including livestock and equine. The Nebraska State Fair is held at Fonner Park in late August every year.
Hay Bale Contest
Each year from February through May, thousands of fans come to Fonner Park for the live thoroughbred horse races. The jewel of the racing season is the $75,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes in April, which attracts horses and racing fans from from across the country. Year-round races are simulcast from all major racetracks.
Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center
Experience what National Geographic has called one of the greatest wildlife phenomena in North America, the great Sandhill Crane migration at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center located on the banks of the Platte River near Grand Island. Approximately 500,000 Sandhill Cranes descend on central Nebraska each spring, spending the days eating in fields and the nights roosting in the river, prior to continuing on their journey north.
Island Oasis Water Park
For the entire family, there’s Island Oasis Water Park with super slides and wave pools to cool off on a hot summer day.
Kids’ Kingdom is a playground designed by and for kids and is located in Grand Island’s Stolley Park. Kids’ Kingdom also offers train rides, while Stolley Park offers a beautiful setting for picnics and gatherings.
Arts & Culture
There’s no need to drive far and wide for a night on the town, to show off your artistic side, or to enjoy a little bit of culture. It’s all right here in Grand Island! Grand Island’s art shows and galleries showcase the creative work of talented artists from Nebraska and the world. Residents and visitors enjoy frequent live performances by professional musicians and entertainers in the Grand Island Concert Association series. And the community comes out in droves for the popular “Live from the Park” performing art series.
Film buffs and Hollywood fans can choose from eight movie theaters in Grand Island. The stunning Grand Theatre shows second-run films, and often hosts live music, speakers and comedians.
