    Job Description
    POSITION SUMMARY
    Operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricates, modifies, or repairs mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines and apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

    Essential Functions Statement(s)
    • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers.
    • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
    • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
    • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
    • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
    • Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations.
    • Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
    • Set controls to regulate machining.
    • Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
    • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
    • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency.
    • Design fixtures, tooling, and experimental parts to meet special engineering needs.
    • Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency and adaptability to setup and production.
    • Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools.
    • Maintain and upgrade fixtures and gages.
    • Perform general die maintenance such as sharpening, repairing and/or replacing details, grinding form steels, timing dies correctly, and modifying tools to current standards.
    • Make decisions and judgments about proper course of action for repairs and maintenance.
    • Maintain good safety and housekeeping practices.
    • Demonstrate good short- and long-term decision making in pressroom trouble shooting, tool room machining practices, safety, diagnosis of problems and course of action, and tool room repair and maintenance work.
    • Promote teamwork and show a willingness to work well in other departments.
    • Demonstrate good work planning practices to do jobs in a very timely, efficient, and safe manner.
    • Demonstrate self-motivation to continuously improve oneself with respect to their job duties and tasks.

    SKILLS & ABILITIES
    Education/Experience:  Six months to one-year CNC programming experience required.
     
    Other Preferences: General manufacturing knowledge.
     
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to stand, walk, handle/finger, and reach outward. The employee is frequently required to reach above shoulders, squat or knell, bend, lift/carry up to 50 pounds, and push/pull up to 50 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to climb and crawl.
     
    Other Physical Requirements: Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required in a manufacturing environment (i.e. safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection).
     
    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles in the plant environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy in manufacturing plant.
